When is the Tax Deadline for Expats? 2026/27 UK Rules

Managing cross-border tax affairs requires advisors and expatriate clients to navigate a complex calendar of strict deadlines. If you are asking, when is the tax deadline for expats?, the answer depends entirely on the type of income, the filing method, and the taxpayer’s residence status.

For the 2026/27 tax year (running from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027), the UK enforces traditional Self Assessment deadlines alongside the new Making Tax Digital (MTD) quarterly updates and rapid 60-day property reporting rules.

Establishing Residence and Notifying Chargeability

Before applying any tax deadlines, expatriates must formally establish their UK residence status under the Statutory Residence Test (SRT). Taxpayers must determine what they believe their residence status to be for the tax year in question, as this dictates their reporting obligations.

If an expat arrives in the UK or develops a new UK tax liability during the 2026/27 tax year, they must notify HMRC of their chargeability to income tax. The statutory time limit for notifying chargeability to income tax is six months from the end of the tax year in which the liability arises.  Therefore, for the 2026/27 tax year, expats must notify HMRC by 5 October 2027.

Self Assessment Filing and Payment Deadlines

The Taxes Management Act 1970 sets out the absolute deadlines for filing an annual Self Assessment return. The deadline you must meet depends on whether you file a paper return or an electronic return.

“A return under this section for a year of assessment (Year 1) must be delivered- (a) in the case of a non-electronic return, on or before 31st October in Year 2, and (b) in the case of an electronic return, on or before 31st January in Year 2.”

For the 2026/27 tax year, the deadlines are:

  • Paper Returns: You must file non-electronic returns by 31 October 2027.
  • Online Returns: You must file electronic returns by 31 January 2028.
  • Tax Payment: You must pay the final balancing payment for your income tax and capital gains tax liabilities by 31 January 2028.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA Quarterly Deadlines

The 2026/27 tax year marks the mandatory rollout of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA). This fundamentally changes the reporting rhythm for expats generating significant self-employment or UK property income.

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords must operate MTD if their total qualifying income for a tax year exceeds the £50,000 threshold.

Expats caught by this £50,000 mandate must use compatible software to send quarterly updates to HMRC, summarising their income and expenses.  The fixed statutory deadlines for these MTD quarterly updates are:

  1. Quarter 1 (6 April to 5 July): 7 August 2026.
  2. Quarter 2 (6 April to 5 October): 7 November 2026.
  3. Quarter 3 (6 April to 5 January): 7 February 2027.
  4. Quarter 4 (6 April to 5 April): 7 May 2027.

After submitting the four quarterly updates, the taxpayer must finalise the tax year by submitting their final declaration (which replaces the traditional SA return) by 31 January 2028.

The 60-Day UK Property Reporting Rule

Expats frequently manage, sell, or dispose of UK residential property while living abroad. When a disposal occurs, you cannot wait until the standard January Self Assessment deadline to report it.

UK residents and non-UK residents face different reporting burdens under Schedule 2 of the Finance Act 2019:

  • Non-UK Residents: You must report all disposals of UK property to HMRC within 60 days of the completion date.  Crucially, you must file this return even if you have no tax to pay or if you sold the property at a loss.
  • UK Residents: You only need to use the CGT on UK Property Account to report the disposal within 60 days if a CGT liability actually arises.

Double Taxation Relief (DTR) Time Limits

Internationally mobile workers often suffer tax in both the UK and a foreign jurisdiction on the same income. To alleviate this, taxpayers can claim Double Taxation Relief (DTR) to offset the foreign tax paid against their UK tax liability.

Statutory time limits govern these claims. For income tax and capital gains tax, you must submit a claim for DTR within four years from the end of the tax year to which the claim relates.  For a DTR claim relating to the 2026/27 tax year, the absolute deadline falls on 5 April 2031.

Summary Table: Expat Tax Deadlines (2026/27)

Property Disposal Property Owners 60-Day CGT Reporting 60 days post-completion Non-residents must report all disposals; residents only report if tax is due.
DTR Claim Taxpayer Double Taxation Relief 5 April 2031 Deadline to claim relief (4 years from the end of the relevant tax year).

Next steps for research: Audit your expatriate client base to identify those exceeding the £50,000 qualifying income threshold for MTD mandation, and verify whether any ongoing property transactions require immediate 60-day CGT reporting prior to the end of the standard tax year.
