Self Assessment accountant fees vary with complexity, record quality, timing and the work included. A straightforward return may cost a few hundred pounds, while property portfolios, foreign income, capital gains, multiple businesses or overdue records can cost substantially more. Obtain a written quote based on your actual facts.
What determines the fee?
- number and type of income sources;
- quality and completeness of bookkeeping;
- sole-trader accounts versus simple supplementary pages;
- property count and ownership structures;
- capital gains, crypto or investment calculations;
- foreign income and residence analysis;
- pension charges, losses and relief claims;
- VAT, CIS or payroll reconciliation;
- deadline urgency;
- HMRC enquiries or earlier-year corrections.
Typical service levels
| Service | What may be included |
|---|---|
| Basic return | One or two simple income sources using organised records |
| Sole-trader return | Business accounts, expenses, capital allowances and tax computation |
| Landlord return | Rental schedules, finance costs, losses and ownership allocations |
| Complex return | Foreign income, gains, residence, trusts, share schemes or multiple activities |
| Catch-up work | Bookkeeping reconstruction, disclosures, overdue returns and penalty review |
Labels are not standardised. Compare scope, not only the headline price.
Fixed fee versus hourly fee
Fixed fee: gives certainty where records and scope are known. Confirm assumptions and extras.
Hourly fee: can suit uncertain or enquiry work but needs an estimate and reporting of overruns.
Monthly package: can include bookkeeping, software, advice and the annual return. Multiply the monthly amount and check contract length.
What is often extra?
- bookkeeping or correcting ledgers;
- VAT, payroll and CIS returns;
- capital-gains schedules;
- foreign tax credit and residence advice;
- pension annual allowance calculations;
- HMRC letters and enquiry work;
- tax planning meetings;
- urgent work near the deadline;
- amendments caused by late information.
Does the fee include VAT?
A VAT-registered accountancy firm normally adds VAT to its fee unless quoted VAT-inclusive. A VAT-registered business may recover VAT only where normal input-tax rules permit and the service relates to taxable business activity. Personal Self Assessment work is not automatically a business VAT claim.
Can the accountancy fee be tax deductible?
The part relating to preparing business accounts and dealing with business tax matters is generally allowable for a sole trade or property business. Fees relating purely to personal tax, investment returns or disputes can be restricted. Ask for an itemised invoice where work is mixed.
Why cheap quotes can become expensive
- data entry or accounts are excluded;
- only one income source is covered;
- calls and HMRC correspondence are charged separately;
- work is outsourced without review;
- reliefs and planning are not considered;
- amendments or handover records cost extra.
A low fee can still be appropriate for a simple return; ensure the service matches the need.
What information to provide for a quote
- taxpayer status and filing deadline;
- employment, pension and benefit sources;
- turnover and bookkeeping format for each business;
- number of rental properties;
- savings, dividends, gains and crypto volume;
- foreign income and countries involved;
- losses, pension contributions and special reliefs;
- any HMRC notices, overdue years or enquiries.
Questions to ask
- Is the quote fixed and VAT-inclusive?
- Exactly which income sources and schedules are covered?
- Are accounts and bookkeeping included?
- Who prepares and reviews the return?
- What are charges for calls, amendments and HMRC letters?
- When must records be supplied?
- Will I receive the full return, computation and submission receipt?
- What are termination and data-export terms?
Comparing accountants
Check relevant experience, qualifications, AML supervision, professional indemnity insurance, data security and responsiveness. A property specialist may be better than a cheaper generalist for complex landlord issues; a tax adviser may be needed for residence or investigations.
Avoid refund-percentage claims
Be cautious where fees depend heavily on a refund and the provider proposes aggressive expense or relief claims. You remain liable for tax, interest and penalties if HMRC rejects them.
Can you reduce the fee?
- keep digital records throughout the year;
- reconcile bank accounts and provide summaries;
- separate business and personal costs;
- supply complete documents early;
- answer queries in one organised response;
- agree the scope before work starts.
