# How to Claim a UK Tax Refund: 2026/27 Guide

**Updated for 2026/27.** You can claim an Income Tax refund when more tax was paid than legally due. The route depends on whether the overpayment arose through PAYE, Self Assessment, employment expenses, pension withdrawals, savings or leaving the UK.

## Check why tax was overpaid

- An emergency or incorrect tax code
- Starting or leaving work part-way through the tax year
- Having more than one job or pension
- A company benefit ending without the code being updated
- Allowable employment expenses not claimed
- Excess tax on a flexible pension withdrawal
- Payments on account exceeding the final Self Assessment liability
- Pension contributions, Gift Aid or Marriage Allowance not reflected

First calculate the whole tax year. A large deduction in one month is not necessarily an overpayment if cumulative PAYE later corrects it.

## PAYE refunds during the tax year

Update jobs, pensions, benefits and estimated income through the Personal Tax Account or contact HMRC. If HMRC issues a correct cumulative code, the employer or pension provider may refund overpaid tax through a later payroll. Check the next payslip's year-to-date figures.

## P800 or Simple Assessment after the year

HMRC reconciles many PAYE records after 5 April and may issue a P800 calculation showing a refund or underpayment. Follow the official GOV.UK instructions in the notice. Some refunds can be claimed online; otherwise HMRC may send a cheque. Verify the calculation against P60s, P45s, pension and benefit records before accepting it.

## Self Assessment refunds

If your return shows a repayment, request it through the Self Assessment account and provide verified bank details. HMRC may set the amount against other tax due or carry out security checks. Amend an incorrect return rather than submitting a separate PAYE claim for income already included in Self Assessment.

## Employment expense claims

Employees may claim tax relief for qualifying unreimbursed costs such as professional fees, uniforms, tools, business mileage or working from home where statutory conditions are met. Ordinary commuting and private costs do not qualify. The refund is tax relief at the rate paid, not reimbursement of the full expense.

Use HMRC's online service where eligible or claim through Self Assessment. Keep receipts, mileage logs and employer reimbursement details.

## Pension withdrawal refunds

The first flexible withdrawal can be taxed using an emergency code. Depending on whether the pension was fully emptied and whether you have other PAYE income, HMRC forms P50Z, P53Z or P55 may be relevant. Check the current official form selection rather than choosing based only on the withdrawal amount.

## Leaving the UK

If you leave the UK and do not expect further UK employment income before the tax year ends, form P85 or a Self Assessment return may be used depending on your filing status and circumstances. A refund does not by itself determine residence or remove tax on continuing UK income.

## Marriage Allowance and pension contributions

Eligible spouses or civil partners can transfer part of the Personal Allowance through Marriage Allowance, potentially creating a refund for earlier qualifying years. Higher-rate pension relief may also need to be claimed where contributions use relief at source. Adjusted net income calculations can restore Personal Allowance or reduce high-income charges.

## Time limits

Claims for overpayment relief are generally subject to a four-year limit after the end of the relevant tax year, though the exact route and deadline depend on the claim. Do not delay while waiting for HMRC to identify the error. Self Assessment amendments normally have a shorter deadline—usually 12 months after the filing deadline—after which a separate overpayment-relief claim may be needed.

## Information to prepare

- National Insurance number and UTR if applicable
- P45s, P60s and payslips
- P800 or Simple Assessment
- Pension statements and withdrawal documents
- Expense evidence and mileage records
- Bank details in your own name
- Self Assessment calculations and payment history

## How long does a refund take?

Timing varies with the route, security checks, return processing and whether HMRC needs more evidence. Online repayments can be faster than cheques, but no adviser can guarantee an immediate release. Check the official account rather than relying on an unsolicited message.

## Tax refund scams

Do not disclose bank or login details through an unexpected text, email or social-media message. HMRC does not ask for sensitive information through a link in an unsolicited refund notification. Go directly to GOV.UK or your Personal Tax Account. Review any refund agent's fee, assignment terms and authority before signing.

## Example

Ella leaves a job in August 2026 and does not work again before 5 April 2027. PAYE assumed she would earn at the same monthly rate for the full year, so too much tax may have been deducted. She checks her Personal Tax Account, retains the P45 and uses the HMRC route appropriate to her position rather than waiting indefinitely.

## Refund checklist

1. Calculate total income and tax for the full year.
2. Identify PAYE, Self Assessment or a specialist claim route.
3. Correct the underlying tax code or return.
4. Submit evidence and verified repayment details.
5. Track the claim through the official account.
6. Check that the refund has not created a new underpayment.
7. Retain the calculation and HMRC confirmation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a tax refund taxable income?

The repayment of overpaid Income Tax is not normally new taxable income, though repayment interest may have separate treatment.

### Can HMRC offset the refund?

Yes. HMRC may use it against other tax debts or amounts due.

### Should I pay a refund company?

You can often claim directly from HMRC for free. Read any agent's fees and legal authority carefully.
