UK Income Tax Bands 2026/27: Your Complete Guide to Rates & Allowances

2 min read

Understanding the UK income tax bands is fundamental to advising clients on their financial affairs. For the 2026/27 tax year, the core structure remains consistent, but the ongoing freeze on thresholds continues to have a significant impact. This guide provides a clear breakdown of the rates, allowances, and key rules applicable in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

How the UK’s Progressive Tax System Works

A common misconception is that crossing into a higher tax band means all of your income is taxed at that higher rate. This is incorrect. The UK operates a progressive tax system, meaning you only pay each rate on the portion of your income that falls within that specific band.

For example, an individual earning £60,000 does not pay 40% on the full amount. Instead:

  • The first £12,570 is tax-free (covered by the Personal Allowance).
  • The next slice of income is taxed at the basic rate (20%).
  • Only the income above the higher rate threshold is taxed at 40%.

UK Income Tax Bands 2026/27 (England, Wales & Northern Ireland)

The main income tax rates for the 2026/27 tax year are set at 20%, 40%, and 45%. These rates apply to non-savings and non-dividend income for taxpayers in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The thresholds for the 2026/27 tax year are as follows:

Band Taxable Income Tax Rate
Personal Allowance Up to £12,570 0%
Basic rate £12,571 to £50,270 20%
Higher rate £50,271 to £125,140 40%
Additional rate Over £125,140 45%

The underlying legislation defines these bands by reference to the basic rate limit, which is set at £37,700 for 2026/27. The higher rate threshold is the sum of the Personal Allowance (£12,570) and the basic rate limit (£37,700), totalling £50,270.

The Personal Allowance and Tapering

For the 2026/27 tax year, the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570. This is the amount of income an individual can receive before they start paying income tax.

However, for high earners, this allowance is reduced. Under section 35 of the Income Tax Act 2007, the allowance is tapered by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000. This means the Personal Allowance is completely removed for individuals with an income of £125,140 or more.

The Impact of Frozen Thresholds

A key policy affecting taxpayers is the decision to freeze the Personal Allowance and basic rate limit. Initially frozen until 2026, this has been extended, and these thresholds are now set to remain at their current levels until 5 April 2031.

This freeze results in “fiscal drag,” where wage inflation and pay rises push more individuals into higher tax bands over time, even if their real-terms income has not increased. This policy is expected to bring over a million more people into the higher rate of income tax by the end of the freeze period.

Different Rules for Scotland

It is crucial to note that the Scottish Parliament sets its own income tax bands and rates for non-savings, non-dividend income. These are different from the rates and bands used in the rest of the UK. When advising Scottish taxpayers, you must refer to the specific rates set by the Scottish Government.

What Is Tax on Savings and Dividends

Different UK-wide rates apply to income from savings and dividends.

Savings Income

For the 2026/27 tax year, the tax rates for savings income align with the main income tax rates:

  • Savings basic rate: 20%
  • Savings higher rate: 40%
  • Savings additional rate: 45%.

Dividend Income

From 6 April 2026, the tax rates for dividend income have increased:

  • Dividend ordinary rate: 10.75%
  • Dividend upper rate: 35.75%
  • Dividend additional rate: 39.35% (unchanged).

These changes were introduced to narrow the gap between tax paid on employment income and tax paid on income from assets.
