# Income Tax Calculator UK Guide: 2026/27 Rates & Thresholds

When developing or utilising an income tax calculator, practitioners must strictly follow the statutory steps set out in section 23 of the Income Tax Act 2007 (ITA 2007). This section provides the legal blueprint for arriving at a taxpayer's final income tax liability.

The process involves seven chronological steps, beginning with the identification of total income across all components (Step 1).  Step 2 then requires the deduction of specific reliefs to arrive at the statutory concept of ["net income"](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/childcare-benefit-and-the-tax-charge/).  The Supreme Court in *R v Commissioners for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs* noted that this statutory concept of ["net income"](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/dont-write-off-your-chances-of-tax-relief/) brought a welcome degree of precision to the calculation process.

> To find the liability of a person (“the taxpayer”) to [income tax](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/hmrc-payment-niers/) for a tax year, take the following steps. Step 1 Identify the amounts of income on which the taxpayer is charged to income tax for the tax year. The sum of those amounts is 'total income'."

Following the determination of net income, you must deduct the [Personal Allowance](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/tax-code-1257l/) and blind person's allowance (Step 3), before applying the relevant tax rates to the remaining components (Step 4).

## 2026/27 Income Tax Rates and Allowances

For the 2026/27 tax year, the government has maintained the freeze on primary thresholds. The Personal Allowance remains fixed at £12,570, and the basic rate limit remains set at £37,700.  Consequently, the higher rate threshold stays at £50,270.

Section 2 of the Finance Act 2026 dictates the primary [income tax rates](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/40-tax-bracket/) for the year.

### **Table: UK Income Tax Rates and Thresholds (2026/27)**

| Tax Band | Taxable Income Range | Rate (Non-Savings/Savings) | Dividend Rate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Personal Allowance** | Up to £12,570 | 0% | 0% |
| **Basic Rate** | £12,571 to £50,270 | 20% | 10.75% |
| **Higher Rate** | £50,271 to £125,140 | 40% | 35.75% |
| **Additional Rate** | Over £125,140 | 45% | 39.35% |

Practitioners must remain aware that while the savings rates align with the main rates (20%, 40%, 45%) for 2026/27, the government plans to increase the savings rates to 22%, 42%, and 47% from April 2027.

## The Personal Allowance Taper (The 60% Tax Trap)

Section 35 of the ITA 2007 governs the Personal Allowance.  For high-earning clients, an [income tax](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/beat-the-reduction-in-the-additional-rate-tax-threshold/) calculator must automatically apply the statutory taper rules. Section 35(2) dictates that the £12,570 Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 that the individual's adjusted net income exceeds £100,000.

This withdrawal mechanism effectively creates a marginal tax rate of 60% for non-savings income falling between £100,000 and £125,140, at which point the Personal Allowance reduces to zero.

## Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA Integration

The 2026/27 tax year introduces a monumental shift in how clients calculate and report their income tax. From 6 April 2026, [Making Tax Digital](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/helping-accounting-clients-move-to-the-cloud/) for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) becomes mandatory for sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income exceeds £50,000.

Calculators and software used for these clients must be API-compatible, enabling digital record-keeping and the submission of digital quarterly updates to HMRC.

*Consider exploring how the statutory ordering of reliefs interacts with the Personal Savings Allowance when a client receives a mixture of dividend, property, and savings income. Additionally, review the mechanics of how [MTD for ITSA](https://www.accountingfirms.co.uk/blog/mtd-for-income-tax-what-small-businesses-need-to-know/) quarterly updates account for seasonal fluctuations in trading income prior to the end-of-year finalisation.*
