Question

Private medical insurance paid by my company — how is it taxed as a benefit in kind?

My limited company is considering taking out private medical insurance for me as the director. I understand it's treated as a benefit in kind, but I'm not clear on exactly how it works in practice. Does the company still get corporation tax relief on the cost, and what do I need to report on a P11D or my Self Assessment?

Hi Luna, yes, company-paid private medical insurance for a director or employee is a reportable benefit in kind, and it works like this. The company reports the annual premium on a P11D (or can payroll it voluntarily through the tax year, though payrolling only becomes mandatory under HMRC's rollout plans later), so you as the director are taxed on the benefit value at your marginal income tax rate, with no extra reporting needed on your Self Assessment if the P11D is filed. The company also pays employer's Class 1A National Insurance on the benefit value, so factor that into the true cost of the policy. On the plus side, the premium itself remains an allowable business expense for corporation tax purposes, so there is no disallowance. Just make sure the policy is taken out in the company's name and the premiums come from the business bank account, to keep everything clean for payroll and HMRC.
