Question

Do I need to file a confirmation statement for my café company every year?

Hi. My wife and I run our café as a limited company, and I keep getting emails about filing a 'confirmation statement' with Companies House. Is this something I need to do every year, and is it different from the annual accounts? What information do I actually need to confirm, and what happens if I forget? Also, does it cost anything to file? I don't want to get hit with a fine for missing something I didn't know about. Cheers!

Yes, you must file at least one confirmation statement every 12 months — it's separate from your annual accounts, which report your finances, whereas the confirmation statement simply confirms that Companies House's records about your company are correct. You'll need to check your registered office address, directors, shareholders, share capital, SIC code and people with significant control, and update anything that's changed. It currently costs £50 to file online or £110 by post, and you can file early if you'd like to get it out of the way. Don't skip it — directors can be fined up to £5,000 and the company can be struck off the register for not filing. It's worth diarising alongside your accounts deadlines so nothing slips through the net.
